Tank O'Saurus here to tell you all that dad took me up the hill to where it's snowy most of the year! Dad says snow is something you should visit when you want it, not something that drops in uninvited. So he took advantage of a work bonus and REI's winter closeout to get him some cross country ski stuff. Since I'm always hot, even at 50 degrees, dad took me with him. It was 20 degrees and I was loving the cool temps, but then some not so cool things happened. First he got me harnessed up, then he put on his skis. Then I knocked him over! He makes this funny noise when he goes down. I was gonna hear that noise a lot, but it was never my fault after the first time. I was sorry and turned upside down to show him. He gave me a little tummy rub and then took 5 minutes to get up. Turns out he hadn't been on skis for 20 years! So he skis across what was once a parking lot and then up this forest service road with me by his side.

Pretty, huh? The ODOT web site said there was 14" of snow so he thought it would be perfect.
Well it turned out the snow was more like 36" deep! I'd take a few steps and POW - one paw would break through the snow and I'd go face first into the snow. I was ready to head back to the car but dad told me to follow him so I got behind and walked in his tracks so that was easier. But then I decided I wanted to walk in front. When we took breaks I laid down right on his skis

After we went uphill, we came back down. Dad thought it would be easier but the powder didn't let him glide at all. But the trail was packed down for me so I ran ahead.

Dad didn't let me get too far ahead so I had to wait for him.

C'mon, slow poke!

You really better hurry, it's getting dark.

I was glad to finally get to the car. Now usually dad drives sitting in the front seat behind the round hoop. But this time he couldn't get the car to move so he got out with one foot inside and one foot outside to push. The car started moving and dad slips on the ice and drives with one foot in the car and him laying on his back on the ice. I've never seen him drive like that. But it worked - we got moving for a while and when we stopped he got in and drove normally. Then we went to this big frozen lake and he skied a little without me. I was really worried he wouldn't be able to handle it alone but he did fine. The lake and sky were really pretty. If you enlarge the tall photo you can see a thin cresent moon and Venus toward the top.

Then we drove home and Princess and Isaac and I jumped all over each other.

There's no business like snow business, I say!

Dad wants us to use it so we can tweet about the mischief we're getting into at home. We almost got into 10 lbs of chocolate a few days ago, but dad's ape sense told him something was going on. He rushed back home and found us still trying to open the bag. The on-line Newf club, Newf Net Had their Secret Santa party today. We sent Presents out to Canada, Missouri and NJ. We Got presents from all over. We got treats and stuffies. Here's some photos! What could be in there?

After 4 days cooped up in the car we finally got in a yard where we could run, and we went at it!

Well, everypup, we had a long journey! We were cooped up in the car for 4 straight days! On the third day, during a break, Dad took us past a giant elk. Isaac and Princess just stared at it, but Tank kept barking. The Elk never moved. Dad told us later it was a statue. Most nights we stayed at a hotel. Isaac escaped every night we were on the road, but he always came back. On the third night we got a special treat! We stayed at a home where there were 2 other newfs! We outnumbered the people 5 to 3! The introductions went well except that miss goody two shoes Princess got a little growly with their girl Abbey. Dad put a stop to that real quick! Eventually they got to be good friends.

We miss our newf friends but the next day we got to our new house in Oregon. And right away dad ran over his camera, couldn't get the one he wanted but couldn't be without a camera so he got a cheap one and curses the shutter lag. Princess went to work with him a few times (Tank howls when dad has to leave the office and Isaac's not really interested in meeting new people - he thinks he might get given away again). Princess is a natural therapy dog. So is Tank.

Here's one of Princess' many admirers at the office.

The open box had the new camera and the closed box is a blower for all the rain and mud we're supposed to have. Even treats can't get Princess to accept the blower but Isaac and I (Tank) don't mind it. Pictures of the house next time!

Notice that there are no pictures? Well we moved to Oregon and dad took Princess to teach her to be a truffle dog. He brought the camera but somehow he dropped it and then backed over it with the car! So no more pictures for us! He wants to get a better camera anyway but he wanted to wait for the D5 Mk II to see how it compared to the D3 in real life. If he waits, that's a month without a camera! Can he stand it?

Well, pups, for months our dad's been totally hogging the computer so he could get a new state license and for weeks he's been telling us we're moving to Oregon. We had no idea what that meant but now we know it means we're spending the rest of our lives in the car! One of us got back at him. Dad took us for walks, fed us then left the room to get some ice and one of us made a huge poo on the carpet in the room. When he came back Tank and Isaac made a break for it and Isaac actually got outside - free to run! He came back after a few minutes, though. We're not telling who held a giant poo until after the walk. :) So wish us a great trip to Oregon and hopefully we'll be better bloggers once we get settled. Dad says that for a geezer like him to get a new state license is almost impossible so he's shocked it worked out so fast. He tells us there are rivers and mountains there for us to play in. Sounds terrific if we make it! Pictures of Oregon later!

How I Beat the Heat

Hey, folks! It's your friendly neighborhood Tank O'Saurus. It's been super hot here so we can't do a lot of our usual antics. To keep from getting bored we do short spurts of craziness and head for the air conditioning. I like to lounge in my near olympic sized lounging pool.
I love to dig in the water just to see it move.
Princess says, "Tank, are you all right? Has the sun gotten to you?"
I don't mind the sarcasm, though. Here's my calendar pose.
Here's how we get crazy with the hose. Notice the lack of Princess. Once the hose comes out she runs just as fast as she can, as far as she can. She hates getting sprayed. Weird for such a swim addict, dontcha think?

Birds and life

We've been busy barking at invaders. Big booms. We'd chase 'em, scare 'em off with our big, powerful Booofs! Then the birds came. We love jumping into the bush with all the birds to scare them away. Tank always tries to catch them in his mouth.

Twice he's caught them. Both times after being used as chewing gum they flew away. Then we go back to jail while dad works in California. He couldn't take us this time. As punishment for him it's 110 degrees there and the air is totally full of smoke from 11 forest fires in the area. Serves him right for leaving us. We're gtting used to it. We're starting to realize he always comes back for us. Even Isaac's not upset anymore when he goes into the cage. We do wish we could be with our papa all the time, though. We're extra cuddly when he gets back. (Click on the pictures for bigger, more expressive versions)

and to be honest, we've really scored on the treats lately.

We got tiny pieces of ice cream sandwiches, chicken and fish jerky, and we've been swimming a lot.

Well, with all the traveling and jail time, our posts have been sparse. Princess went through her 'hormonal period'

which meant Isaac went crazy and had to stay in a separate jail. Since it got hot, we got our summer coifs. Isaac's tail got done the old way while our wild woman aunt Jolene did something creative that looked great. Here we are:

Where Have We Been!?!?

It's all dad's fault, folks! First he has to work in a place with no internet access outside of work, and work blocks blogger. THEN his laptop, his only computer, dies when he tries to uninstall Norton. It wouldn't uninstall and the Norton removal tool corrupted the operating system. Norton: never again. After using them for more than 10 years, it's over. Go with Kaspersky. So now he built a desktop and is saving the data from the hard drive to the desktop. In few weeks, (100 GB over USB) he'll restore the laptop.

BTW, you should see dad shop! He's a maaaaaaniac! He figures a core 2 duo should suffice. But WAIT! Quad core's on sale! And look how cheap RAM sets are! Why not buy two? Of course, you need a 64 bit operating system to *use* all that RAM...

In the meantime, we can't WAIT to catch up with all your blogs. It will take time, but we've missed you all!

Not only that, but it's *snowing* here now! It's funny to see the honeysuckle in full bloom with snow coming down.

On Easter Dad and I went to the Plaza - It's a great outdoor shopping area

where fashionistas like me go to see and be scene!

Once again Dad Stuffed me into a costume.

We had a great day of people admiring me and petting me and giving me treats. That was just the start! I met other puppies and tried to get dad a date but no matter how cute I was I just couldn't do everything and he struck out again! But great dad that he is, he bought me a peanut butter cookie from Latte Land. Dad says it's one of the best coffee shops in Kansas City. He says Broadway has better mochas, but they' don't have peanut butter cookies and they're not on the Plaza. Latte Land certainly has the best treats!

A lady with the exact same charming English accent as my vet had an equally charming older dog that I made instant friends with.

The English lady and her friend fell in love with me, too. She knew that I am as aristocratic as her accent. She has the same name as an English Princess, so maybe that's why we hit it off so well. I don't let just anyone pet me. Especially not for such an extended period. This was truely the divine Miss M!

We met a lot of little kids.

One of them showed me her butterfly sticker collction. Am I a natural therapy dog or what!

We also went to Three Dog Bakery. They feed me treats

whenever I come plus it's a fun place to meet other pups.

Then we went to a friend's house. I got fed ham, which was really yummy. Blue, a Catahoula lives there. He's fun to play with most of the time. It was a long day out just me and Dad and I felt very special. At the end I was very tired and this happened...

Princess' Parade!

Princess has always wanted a parade. Last Saturday her dream came true. She liked the adoring crowds, but didn't like the costume very much. She destroyed her fringe. And by the time the Parade started, she was down to 2 pink and green scrunchies. She started out with one set on each paw and one on her tail. Her tail bobs around like a conductor's baton so it looks really great. She shared the day with her brother Tank. Isaac isn't as predictable around other dogs. A friend (He's single, ladies!) helped me walk them. The Newf club had about 8 other dogs in the parade.

Jail of Another Kind

Well, Dad's traveling for work again. This time we drive for 3 hours and stay with him in the evening and at night, but we stay with Aunt Jolene during the day. These cells are better 'cause we can be inside or outside by running through some plastic. Aunt Jolene's yard is smaller than Uncle Mike's in Manhattan, but it's still pretty big. Here's Tank letting off some steam after a long drive:

We've had several episodes of diarrhea in the apartment where we stay at night, so Dad's started us on a pretty bitter medicine. We've taken it wrapped in cheese but refused it in hot dog. Then Dad had a brilliant idea - he got some caramel magic shell, poured a base, froze it, put the pill on, froze it and covered it in more shell. We swallow that no problemo! Next he's trying fruit roll-ups. He makes our breakfast and dinner, so at least it's not just plain kibble.

The Bestest Big Brother EVER!

Princess here with stories of how great Tank is! Now Don't tell him I said so, but he really is the bestest big brother ever! I bark at him and pounce on him and bite his ears to get him to play a lot and he never lets me down. Just listen to some of the great stories of him being sweet to me:

One day, last winter just before we turned one year old, I looked at Tank and he knew I wanted to play. I told him, I'll play the crafty predator and you be my victim! So I ran off, hiding behind the rosebush in the snow. I knew that hiding behind the 1/2 inch canes in my jet black coat I'd be completely invisible against the snow. I crouched down in anticipation of the kill.

So Tank waits till I'm ready and he comes sauntering down the yard, that magnificent head swaying gently side to side to a spot near where I am. At just the right moment he looks away as if suddenly fascinated by something waaay off to the left. I rush out of hiding, take a huge leap in the air to crash down on him. He hears my charge but instead of jumping towards me he jumps straight up to present a huge target for my leap. I contact him with a thud and he plops to the ground and I pounce, enjoying my well earned meal.

Then there was the time we were about to go on a long car ride. After romping in the back yard, dad asked me to poo. I froze. I knew he wanted something, but I didn't know what. I was horrified that dad wanted something but I didn't know how to please him. I wanted desperately to please my papa! So he said it again, more clearly. He recognized the look on my face but was at a loss how to communicate to me what he wanted. While he was trying to figure it out, along comes my bestest big brother! Tank walked up to me and slid his nose next to mine and looked me right in the eyes. Dad says it was as if he took my face lovingly in his hands and calmed me down. After 20 or 30 seconds he turned his back, trotted off a few yards, and pooped. So then I turned my back, trotted off a few steps and pooped! Boy was my dad happy. I got lots of "good girl!"s and Tank got lots of "good boy!"s. Isn't Tank clever!

Then there was the time when I was maybe 6 or 8 months old. Back then we pups would sleep on the tile 'cause it was cool. But there was no tile next to dad and I, being desperately in love with my papa, wanted to cuddle next to him. So one morning I sit right by his head, watching him up on his bed. I wanted to jump up, but I didn't dare. When papa saw me he told me to come up in a sweet voice and patted the bed but I was too afraid. So I trot off to get Tank. I tell him all my woes and we both walk into dad's room. Tank looks up at dad and quails a bit. Isaac told us that trying to sleep on the people's bed got him a bad punishment at his 3rd home in New Orleans. Tank stayed brave and when dad saw him he says, come on up, Tank! And Tank hops up! Tank walks up to dad's face and dad tells him what a good boy he is! Dad gives Tank a great petting! So I hesitantly jump up near dad's feet and I get a "good girl"! Now I walk towards dad's head and he pets me, too. Tank turns to leave but before he goes I turn back, he turns towards me and we slap tongues. Dad says it looked like we gave each other a high 5 with our tongues! So Tank jumps off into the sunrise and I get to cuddle with my papa! I'm so happy and so grateful to Tank for paving the way!

Sometimes Tank and I joust. We separate and run at each other full tilt, leaping and crashing together with an earth shattering impact. Usually he lets me win. When he doesn't I bounce pretty far.

Isaac turned 4 on Jan 2. Princess and Tank turned 2 on Jan 4. How numerologically weird is THAT!

So amidst the raucus celebrations and treats galore we wanted to take time out so that you, our faithful readers, could wish us a happy birthday as well!

We had cool paws chicken soup for dinner tonight. Mixed with the Chixoup LBP kibble was yogurt and peanut butter! Yummm-O!

Princess the Nightmare Huntress

Crikey, Mates! Princess here reporting on a most amazing adventure I had just the other night. It was late, you see, and my dad was asleep. I have a story to tell about how I first learned I could go up on Papa's bed and quite a story it is. But that story is for another post. Now this little Sheila's quite a cuddle-newf so I often jump up on Papa's bed and lay down close in and snuggly just for some affection. My Papa loves me and he's the best at giving me pets, but this night was different! You see, something was eating my Papa! I couldn't see it, but I could smell it! And Papa was acting funny, like he didn't want to be eaten. Who could blame him!? Good thing I was awake! This little sheila sprung in to action! I didn't just jump up on the bed, I leapt right from the floor and Squished the thing that was eating my papa! Of course since it was on my papa I landed right on my papa, too! I'm a great jumper! It's 3 feet from the floor to the top of the bed and another foot or so to the top of the papa. Plus he's not at the edge of the bed and I can't stand right next to the bed if I'm going to get any forward momentum. So I had to jump at least 5 feet high and 4 feet forward to land with my body straight down on top of the papa. But all that counts is it worked! As soon as I landed that thing was gone, my papa made a strange noise, woke up and started petting me. I saved the day!

(Papa's note: This is a true story. It's happened twice in the last 3 weeks. Princess weighs 115 to 126 lbs depending on the day. I woke up from the force of the impact and both felt and heard the breath whooshing out of my chest. I realized I was having a nightmare. "Hi big girl.")

Yes, it's been 40 years, but there's been a lot happening here. But we appreciate the Woober and he was kind enough to interview us, so here goes!

1) I understand you have JOBS! Please tell me about your jobs and, most importantly, when you get home from a hard day at work, are your apes waiting for you with a muttini and a footrub?

We have MANY jobs! But they're mostly at home and if not, dad's with us so we all get home at the same time. But still, the belly rubs are plentiful. None of us likes footrubs. OK, our jobs:

Tank: Chief toy chaser, Head Clown, linguistics, Drama King, smile maker, enthusiastic therapist, webmaster, Tummy rub quality inspector,.

Princess: Recreation instigator, Back-up barker, Primary cuddler and comforter, gentle therapist, Daddy's Grrrrl, toy stealer, minister of awkward sleeping positions.

Isaac: Security, First barker, chief sniffer, stuffie chewer, Strong but silent therapist, people pusher, Motorcycle chaser, Bird patrol officer.

2) How did you get your names? Do you have any nicknames for each other?

Isaac was named Atticus by his third owners. Dad thought that name sounded too dark and forboding. Dad likes the name Isaac so that was how Isaac got his name. Princess' story is here and Tank's is here. Princess is called baby girl, Good Girl and cutie, Tank is called Tank O'Saurus and Tank Good Boy. Isaac is called Big Boy and Isaac Good Boy.

3) I understand you guys are picky eaters. What is wrong with you? I mean, what kind of foodables do you like to eat/use to disguise your kibble? How much do dogs your size eat anyway? (And, also, if I ate that much do you think I would grow to Newf size?)

Tank eats 3-4 cups twice per day, Isaac 2-3 cups, Princess 2-3 cups. If you ate that much you'd weigh as much as we do, but you wouldn't be able to walk, let alone chase your sissy.

As for our legendary pickiness, well, it's hard to say. Dad thinks it's 'cause the gal that bred us fed us junky food that we got used to - like always getting french fries at her house then him feeding us nutrtious but less tasty stuff. But for us it's just the way we are. We love meatables, especially chickenables. If dad's eating vegetables we want those, too, but not as the only thing on our kibble. Sometimes we just like to drive our dad crazy. Tank just dropped 25 lbs for no reason and is all skinny and bony. Now he's eating a lot but not gaining back much. Vet says nothing wrong. We're just that way! We like rice, nuts, honey, peanut butter, some apples and fruits and all kinds of meatables. Once Tank swiped a whole bag of Hershey's Kissables and we all loved them! Cheetos are a favorite but ice cream is the BEST!

4) How did your peoples decide they wanted Newfs? Do you think anyone can have just one?

Dad spent a lot of time training and babysitting a friend's Newfs. He absolutely loved them! When the gal who owned them decided she wanted to breed, dad learned all he could about the pregnancy and delivery process. When the time came, his input ended up saving our lives. He helped deliver us and spent a lot of time with us as pups. We stayed at his house a lot. When it became time for us to go to our forever homes, dad got Isaac, our dog dad, and Princess and Tank, his 2 favorites among 6 extremely cute and adorable pups. 5) I know you live near the Republic of Gooberstan. Do you have any juicy gossip about StanMan?

Really all we know is here and here. And of course, here. Bottom line is that Stan is as manly and cool a dog as you could ever hope to meet, and his girl's a treat as well!

So Isaac was laying on the porch absentmindedly chewing on a stuffy while Princess and I (Tank) romped around the yard. Dad came out on the porch, Isaac looked up and the stuffy lept up and started running. All 3 of us went nuts and chased the poor bunny but it escaped under the fence. OOOOOOOh that wascawy wabbitt! The 3 of us dug and jumped and howled but the bunny was gone. Not only that but dad was mad at us for jumping on the fence. Sigh... Wouldn't any of you have done the same?

Picky Princess' Recipe Corner

Woo Hoo Doggies! Dad came out of a long run of duds and hit one out of the park! Good thing, too, 'cause Tank's been losing a lot of weight lately and he has none to spare. Vet says there's nothing wrong, so dad's gonna have to improve his game considerably. We have a huge shipment of Timberwolf on the way, so that should help. Dad buys natural peanut butter and pours the oil off to use later. Here's what dad did last night.

Pumpkin, microwaved with water or canned or cooked any way you want.
peanut oil
ground meat of your choice
Chicken stock
rice, cooked

Fry half the pumpkin in 2 tsp peanut oil to flavor.
Combine all ingredients and mix with kibble.
serve at the temperature your pups prefer.

In other news, we have decided to gather our works of Art along with artists' statements in one place. Being prolifically creative, we shall probably do this periodically. Nanook figures prominently here 'cause he inspired us to blog and to start creating works of art. Here's our most famous, dedicated to the memory of Oscar Airedale and entered into Nanook's contest "Do Airedales Malt" of oh so long ago. As you all know, Airedales are among the classiest pups ever to grace the canine kingdom. While it is possible to concieve of a circumstance where an Airedale would “malt”, it's more likely that someone was looking to see if Airedales “mall”. Do they go to the mall for classy and fashionable outfits and classy and fashionable companionship? And the answer is, “Of course they do!”

An interGalactic transmission from your Star correspondant, Tank O'Saurus!

If you're Sirius about astronomy then there are a few things you know, like the dog star. Well now there's a new dog in space. Not me, but Wally!

Of course we all know Wally's a black hole when it comes to food

And like many black holes, he's formed a whole galaxy! Nasa has just realized that this galaxy is Wally , the Corgadorian Grey. Click on the Press release to read it more easily.

Special Props to Nanook for coming up with that fabulous name, Corgadorian Gray! For those of you who don't know, Wally is part Corgi, part Labrador. Hence, he's a Corgador. Nanook, being clever and unimaginably literate, called him a Corgadorian Gray. NASA isn't as fabulous at names, as you can tell. Zwicky 18 may score high in scrabble, but it certainly doesn't flow flittingly from the tongue. Maybe they'll rename it 'Wallaxy 1'. And if Wally wants to be alone, he can build 'Battlestar Wallactica'. Can you grow Wallymellon with hydroponics?

For all you sky gazers, Here's a picture that will help you find Wallaxy 1. Click on it for a legible version. For you southern hemisphere dloggers, you're just out of luck. It's 4,000 or so light years across and 60 million light-years away, so don't expect to get back by dinner if you're planning a trip. This is Princess, avoiding the pea...

She often sleeps like this, even if someone beats her to the shower. No one knows why. They all sleep on tile because it's cool. Only right after a short trim will any of them sleep on foam, carpet or my bed.

Notice the tiles and hard chunks of grout lying about. Princess and Tank used to chew on the edge of the tile, eventually dislodging it. Newf puppies are TOUGH!

Dad here, with stories that demonsttrate how amazing these pups really are. Every once in a while, when I have a flashback, I'll jump in with a story that's too good to be lost in the mists of my memory. They're fading too fast as it is. Princess and Tank were littermates. For the first year of their lives they had incredible communication. Tank was amazingly skilled at communication. Princess was really in touch with the feelings of her fellow creatures. These are their stories.

P&T were about 6 months old. I was working with them on pooping on command. I thought they had it and we were going on a long journey. Princess couldn't hold it for near as long as the boys, so I asked her to go poo. She looked at me and I asked her again. She froze. I could tell she knew I wanted her to do something, but she didn't know what. She was such a daddy's girl this stressed her out totally. So I'm standing there, wondering how I can remind her when Tank comes trotting up, slides his nose next to hers and stares deeply into her eyes. You could tell it was as if he affectionately took her face in his hands. They looked at each other for almost a minute and you could see Princess relax. Tank then turned trotted away and with his back to her squatted and pooped. Princess then turned, trotted away, and pooped. Not only did she get tons of praise, but so did Tank. What a great older brother he is!

A tale of Two Kings (Tank visits the ministers of Gooberstan)

Hey, Friends, it's me, your friendly neighborhood Tank O'Saurus!

Yesterday my dad told me it was my turn for an adventure! I had no idea where we were going. But Woah, Doggies, there was a big lake there! I was woozy just thinking about going swimming! But then something really strange happened. We turned into this parking lot and I smelled doggies unlike any other I'd ever smelled before! Lots of them! I couldn't wait to meet them! And guess who was there in all his glory? Stanley! You guessed it, the King of Gooberstan! I guess he calls himself "President", but either way, he's the supreme ruler. And not only that, but he and his kind are the Kings of Terriers! Woo Hoo! So I got to meet Stan the Gooberman in person! Hob nobbing with the celebrities! Aren't you jealous? In Fact, my dad tells me that I, too, am a King, but of a different sort. That is a subject for a different post! So Stanley himself is two kings, but Stanley and I are also two kings!

So at this place was Stanley, by far the studliest dude among a fine gaggle of royal courtiers both male and female. Most were Dales, but there were a few others as well. Hercules the demigod was there, too! Herc is one cute pup!

Stanley even had some court jesters!

They served great food! I had a couple of franks, cake and some fruit! There was even Wallymelon in honor of our favorite Corgadorian Gray! I'm sure Wally was there in spirit, but we'd sure like to meet him in person!

In the main part of the Royal Pavilion there was Dale memorabilia. The humans competed to see who was worthy of getting the best stuff for their Dales. Stanley's mom scored some highly coveted Daleomabilia - easily the best of the litter! We don't have pictures because dad's camera started to act up. We missed a lot of good pictures that day. The one we wanted most was a picture of the incredibly cute pure black Dale girl that might get the honor of being the Queen of Gooberstan. She was shy but friendly and has come through a very hard life. I know that'll cause some stress eating for Ruby, Asta, and Suki. Since Stanley has already posted, I'm linking to some of his pictures. Dad's camera has died the forever death, not just the dead battery death. Dad says it will be a very long time before he can get a new one. But don't worry faithful readers! We have a huge backlog of stories to tell and pictures to share!

Stanley held court in a big area next to the pavilion, which was like the outer court for commoners. Stanley, Like Nebuchadnezzar, had a rule that no one could approach him in the Royal Chambers without being invited. I think that this only applies to Royal Official Functions (ROF) like the one I was at. Since I've never been to a ROF before, I don't think I understood the protocol very well. The ROF language was a little hard for me, too. I think it sounded something like Klingon! Dad told me that maybe I should not spend quite so much time licking their hind ends.

The whole event was for the ministers of Gooberstan to talk finances, make plans for the future of Gooberstan and Party. There were lots of VIP Dales and their humans running around, having secret meetings and planning daring rescues of Airedales in unfortunate circumstances.

Before I left, Stanley gave me a pressie! My first pressie ever! Thanks Stanley! No pic because now there is no camera. Sigh. But it was a great pressie! It was a tough stuffie that sqeaks ans has a rope! Something for everypup! I took it home and we all loved it!

Because I was leashed and therefore could only cause limited mischief, Dad could focus on his surroundings a little. He found out that Stanley's mom knows Pooka! Pooka leads tours to China and Stanley's mom has been there. Pooka must have taken her. After a looong day of trying to learn ROF protocol, this happened:

And then we went to the Plaza, which you will read about soon, I hope. (When dad gets his act together!) There I got 1/2 hr massages by my devoted fan clubs. That's right, plural. There are stores where everything stops when I walk in and they massage me, feed me treats and coo while I relax in the air conditioning 'cuz I'm such a cool dog. Woo Hoo! Wait till you see!

It's been a weird few weeks, doggies! We go in and out of Jail. Last week, we ESCAPED!!

Somebody didn't close the gate in our backyard and so when dad let us out for our morning rituals, we pushed the gate open and went to town! Dad went back to sleep completely oblivious and we cruised the hood! We can't share all the details, but after an hour we looked in on some Aussie shepherds and their peeps invited us in for a cool drink. We gladly accepted and then dad shows up and we jumped in his car and got chauffered home! Pretty good times and home before it got hot!

Dad says we're going on our little journeys for the next few weeks and not spending much time at home so he can pay for our toys. Now that we're used to the routine we're getting to like our home away from home 'cause we get to run in the big yard a lot. We like to be home even better 'cause it's cooler, we have more room to stretch out, and we see our dad more. Plus he cooks for us when we're home. We don't eat much when we're away 'cause it's just plain kibble. dad brings the good stuff from home but there are no toppings. Dad says if we'd catch animals we could all just live off the land and he wouldn't have to work but we say nothing doing! He's the dad and we want air-conditioning. Off to work you slacker!

Jail!

Here I am, the beautiful Princess, stuck in JAIL! I wasn't driving badly, I wasn't eating anything naughty, I'm a good little
daddy's grrrl! And yet here I am. At least I'm not alone. Tank and Isaac are here with me. The jail keeper is actually kind of nice. He lets us out into this big, fenced yard 4 times a day and gives us lots of love and water. He doesn't cook for us though. We all got in the car and drove and drove and drove! We went further than Gooberstan! Dad got some work in this far away town and he wanted to be able to see us every day instead of not seeing us for 4 days. So dad comes and visits every morning and we chase the ring but I hate it when he leaves. He says he has to go to work to buy us dog food. Of course I'm all in favor of THAT, but I like having my papa WITH me. Here's Isaac in front of the jail, with the warden. We were hoping to visit the A04, but their parents couldn't get free.

This is my imitation of Pooka during our playtime out in the big yard. Isaac is thinking of chasing me and Tank's inside getting his prison haircut. You should see what they did to my hair! a buzz cut with the buzz lines showing. I'm punk! It is a lot cooler, though so I can run and play and kick some Newfy butt!

Below we all are hoping to get free. Isaac actually escaped once, but he came back for Tank and I and they closed up the hole. Pretty good for an old man! You can see Tank was getting a bit loopy from confinement. Then the Warden demonstrated how he was going to get Isaac to divulge our secrets, but none of us told him anything! The video is of me kicking Isaac's butt in my best Xena fashion. I did that to Stanley, too! Scroll down to the second to last video in Stanley's post. Finally, after 3 days, dad came with the leashes, we all got in his car and lived happily ever after. Now we're lounging at home. Tank went swimming today but it was so hot he had to get back in the air conditioning. We're all going, one at a time this week. Have fun, everypup!

Sorry about the long wait for news from Newfland! Dad's been hogging the computer for work. Since we like to eat, we'll have to let him. There's been a whole lot going on that we can't wait to tell you about. Here's a teaser:

Training - Updated!

We have a lot of tales waiting to get into this blog, but the desires of our fans come first! You asked about training, so here goes.

First of all, to train others, you must first train yourself. To discipline others, you must have self discipline. To control the life of another, you must have self control. To be a successful trainer, these are the paradigms you live by. Do we live by them? Heck no! We want Pawty time! We say feed us something good and we expect to be obeyed!

So how did it happen? Well, here's the story. First, know your quarry. Our dad is intelligent and expects the same out of us. He named us by seeing what we were like. Rather than forcing his prejudices and desires on us, he looked carefully to see who we were and tried to maximize our potential. That includes genetic potential. Ever since we were old enough to eat food, he made sure there was lots of DHA in our diet. This maximizes brain development. He always had a ramp for us to maximize our joint development. He spent hours researching nutrition and obsessed over every microgram of calcium we ate. All this can be used against him. Of course you have to stay within your subject's capabilities. We knew there would always be kibble, we just wanted better toppings on it.

Study the above pictures carefully. Look at Princess. (Nanook and Pooka, look at her tongue!) See how skinny she is? Our dad knows there's a window of time in which growth and brain development occurs. Poor nutrition during that time means less than optimal capabilities the rest of our lives. Princess' ribs are showing. That means she's not getting enough calories. What can dad do to get her to eat? Hmmm.....

So she played the biggest role in this scam. But Isaac and Tank helped, too.

Isaac Here with an important addition. These kids think the world started when they became self-aware. Tank, did you ever stop to think who planted that notion of achieving your genetic potential? Before you were born, I played a trick that I knew would ensure great meals for all future generations of newfs. You all know my story, how I went from home to home and was confined in a crate for long hours every day. Well when I got here, after 2 months I grew 4 inches. I was 22 months at the time! That's what got our human dad started thinking that it was so important to take good care of his dogs early on. Let me tell you, growing 4 inches at 20 months was quite a feet! And quite a bit of legwork as well! Ha Ha, I crack myself up!

OK, well, thanks, dad, that was sure clever of you. Now, back to the pictures above. See how cute Tank is? Who could refuse that cuteness anything he wanted? Then the clincher was we all started to eat grass. We'd look into our dishes, poke in there with our noses, maybe gag down one nibble, then slo.o.o.o.o.ly walk outside and eat grass. When inside we'd eat hairballs and whatever little thing was lying on the floor, but not our food if it wasn't good enough. Time's running out, dad. Too bad I'll never be all that I could have been if you'd just fed me properly.

Then, of course, if he did make a good dinner we'd be all over it and when we were done we'd walk up one by one and give him a big lick thank you. Wow, dad, that was awesome! Remember that praise has to be the mainstay of training. We were subtle. Never anything so obvious as a sigh. a little guilt by eating grass, a lot of making him feel like the best dad in the world when he gave us a nice, cooked meal with meat. Then we escalated things a bit. At first, plain ground beef was amazing. Then to get a reward he had to flavor it, and cook it the way we liked it - seared on the outside, rare inside. Eventually he got so good at flavor we started to work on timing. If he took longer than a few minutes to make it, we walked away. It worked, too. (Dad's note - it did work. I couldn't speed up the time it took for their meat to cook, but I learned to speed the cooling. First I added less liquid during cooking. Then I took the pot off the burner when the pot was hot enough to finish the job on its own instead of leaving the pot on the heat until the meat was done. At the end I added ice to speed up the cooling and have the right amount of liquid so it would coat the kibble and not be chunks they could pick out.) Of course what we really wanted was for him to add the meat raw, but we have to accept the limited capabilities of our subject. Eventually we'd walk away from plain ground beef, but that may have done us more harm than good. That got his suspicions aroused. Not only that, but development is fast drawing to a close. So we may have a lot less gourmet dining in our near future. But it was fun while it lasted!

Our papa is forced to come up with something to put on our kibble every night. We wont eat it plain and we're too skinny as it is. We know he's gonna put the hammer down one day, but we're enjoying it while it lasts. We wont eat the same thing twice in a row, or even twice within 2 days so he has to get pretty creative with whatever is lying around. Tonight he made cranberry-pecan barbeque rice. It was a hit! Princess pretended she wasn't going to eat it, but as soon as she started she couldn't stop! We all licked our bowls clean!

THEN...

Something weird was happening in the 'hood. Lots of odd noises, lots of dogs barking in the distance. We joined in, of course. We not refering to Tank. He pretty rarely barks. There's little to see here, so just close your eyes and let the music penetrate your souls.

Tank's Introduction part Deux

In our last episode, I was born and started growing into the cutest puppy imaginable. Every moring I'd bound out of the puppy room raring to go and ready to chow down! I was almost always first out and first to the food. Until one day...

Much to my dad's horror, I was the last one out, todddled uncertainly toward the food, sniffed it and walked away. He knew I had parvo and took me right to the vet. I had IVs going before I started losing fluids both ends. After 3 days I could go home. Two of the other pups got parvo but we all got to the vets before any vomiting or diarrhea started and we all did well. This is me with my leg shaved where the IV was. After me, Shazaam and Tracy got it, too. So when I came home it was Isaac, dad and I, then the other two joined us. They went from here to their forever homes. After her second shot, Princess came to live with us. I was really glad to see her again. Parvo was a rough thing but it doesn't seem to have stunted my growth any. I'm solid muscle and 30 lbs heavier than my dad, 40 lbs heavier than my mom and only 19 months old!

Of course Isaac was a great dad. He loved to play with me. He let all us pups climb all over him. That kind of backfired on him 'cause as we got bigger we still climb on him. Now that we out weigh him it scares him and my human dad makes me stop. But I really love my dad and stick up for him if there's any trouble, like birds invading the backyard or a motorcycle going by.

I'm a great big brother to Princess, too. I let her win wrestling matches all the time. I love to lick people and if they squeal it drives me wild and I lick even more! I'm also a clever climber. At 4 months I could escape from baby gates that even Isaac couldn't get over. I can push out slats, squeeze through, dig under or climb over. I'm a great talker, too. I've even taught my human dad how to speak some dog. More later - Tank

Papa went to the farmers market a few days ago and didn't take any of us. :( He said the market didn't alow dogs and it was too hot to leave us in the car - we'd roast! Now vegetables don't get us excited. We eat a few fruits, but Tank wont touch Wallymelon and the others could take or leave it. So if it's not a social event, farmers markets should leave us pretty unexcited. So we thought. But Woa, Doggies! Our dad brought home something that made us forgive every lame meal he's ever made! It seems there's some organic style cow growers there. And one of them is starting to care about us doggies! So what does he do? He grinds up beef hearts and sells them for $1/lb! That's about 1.61 Euro/kg, 2.58 AUD/kg (or do you guys use something else), 3.18 SingaporeDollars/kg, and for the latest blogitor, 15.74 South African Rands/kg. Pretty good deal no matter how you grind it! Well, let me tell you we were all underfoot in the kitchen when that bad beefcake was cooking! When it finally found its way to the floor we were on it! That was one great dinner. Rumor is we're getting the other half pound tonight! Can't wait! We're sleeping up a storm in preparation!

Oscar Airedale May 26 2006 to July 28 2007

We're so sorry to hear that Oscar passed on today. His parents were very devoted, he had a lot of fans and he was as smart and cute as could be. He was generous enough to supply us with pictures for Tank's entry, which relates to the painting "The Persistence of Memory". Tank dedicates it to the memory of Oscar. Even though it was silly in its conception we hope that Oscar would have liked it. Oscar was a real winner and his family gave him everything a dog could ever want. He was world famous and will be greatly missed. Good bye, terrific terrier.

Well, it's been a long time since our last post. Dad's taken time off because the Photoshopping for the entries to Nanook's contest have made his eyes hurt and his vision blurry. We want a younger dad! One who has a house in Canada on a big lake!

But there's more about Nanook . As you all know, he entered the Captain Morgan Pose Off. In a stunning turn of events his picture was rejected. We are sure this is a mistake. We have appealed to the folks at the Captain Morgan's site to post Nanook's picture. If you want to join in and howl at this injustice, here's the contact info. Woofs, everypup! We've been tagged to be a pickin' (books) and a grinnin'. So in honor of Nanook and Wally, here we go! (Thanks for tagging us, guys!) The top two pics are Princess and Isaac, Next are Tank and Princess, then 2 Tanks, and the last row is Isaac and Princess. We're particularly happy tonight because dad made popcorn tonight. We looove popcorn! We used to love Pupcorn, but they recalled it back in the spring and we're not willing to chance it again. Dad throws single kernels and we catch them or he tosses a few on the floor and we go crazy sucking them up! Pretty entertaining family night! Dad's pleased because Princess has eaten three whole meals in a row! Her ribs are less visible already.

As for books we like, Princess is the only pup who still has a taste for books in this household. She's devoured an atlas because she likes foods of the world. Tank ate a bible when he was about 6 months old - the kind with leather binding and maps. He ate the whole thing. It's real food all right. Isaac hasn't ever been interested in books since he's been here. Dad says one of the most important books you can read is "On Beyond Zebra" by Dr Suess. We're all waiting for Nanook's book to come out, of course. Are there any other books left that we didn't mention? I think that's all there are.

Princess Meets Stan and Hercules at a Dog Park with Water!

Hi Everybody! Wow I had a fun day yesterday! But boy was I mad at my dad! He was a dork and a half. I was so mad I wouldn't even take treats from him the rest of the day. But this morning I gave him lots of licks to let him know he was forgiven and could still type for me.

Yesterday I went on my first playdate EVER! I met two GREAT Airedales named Stanley and Hercules. Stan was the bigger one - bigger than Hercules! His mom says he's not an OranguDale but close. My dad was an hour late getting me there, but the Aire-moms were really gracious about it. Dad says that if I didn't keep him up the whole night before barking, maybe he could have moved faster. But did he want our house invaded? I think not. After saving the house from the maurauding squirrels and geese I deserved better but he made a completely lame breakfast. I wouldn't eat any of it. He made a chicken tortilla soup to pour over our Timberwolf Elk. I picked out a few pieces of chicken but that was it. I have to say, though, he redeemed himself last night with a beef and cheese risotta over Chicken Soup Large Breed Puppy. That was yummy!

But getting back to the playdate - when we finally got there the two Aire-boys were waiting for us with their moms. They were so gracious. Stanley checked me out to see if I was tuff enough but my dad yelled at me before I could show him. Sheesh, dad. You're embarrasing me! It wasn't the last time...

So Stan, Hercules and I were running around, when suddenly - Suddenly - I saw it. The sea ! All else was forgotten as I made my mad dash for the water. Now I ask you - especially you fellow newfs - Wasn't that totally expected? Well it freaked my dad out. Just my being off leash freaks my dad out a little. But when I ran off totally mad like that he regressed to the level of a goldfish. He couldn't leave me alone.

Once in the water I was Queen of the Sea! Other dogs asked me how I could be so amazing in the water and we played with a lot of different pups. To really appreciate the pictures, click on them to make them bigger.

Had too much to drink, there, Stan? He Stole my ring!

I tried to break up a fight between 2 little dogs and my dad was afraid I'd get blamed for starting it so he yelled at me for that. Then he wanted me to bring the ring right to him. Sure I indulge him in that when we're alone, but here it was my own crowd! How could he embarass me like that. I kept bringing the ring to the shallow area but he wouldn't jump the 2 feet into the water like a good servant should.

Stan was such a gentleman, he came in and got it a few times for my dad to throw.

That Stan was so funny! He'd sit in front of my dad waiting for him to throw the ring and if dad didn't do it fast enough Stan would jump up right into dad's face! what a riot! Way to go, Stan! I get impatient with my papa, too and that was true vindication!

My dad liked Stan and Hercules and their moms a lot, too. Dad and I have never met an Airedale and we thought they were charming. Their moms are charming, too.

So could dad have been smart and shmoozed with the ladies? Could he leave me alone to look cool in front of the other dogs? Nooooo. He was so preoccupied with embarassing me he could barely talk. None of us have been in a dog park since that big bulldog attacked Tank and I think my dad had a little PTSD going on, so after a day I decided to cut him a little slack.

I have to live as the only member of the civilized gender with three males. Let me tell you my dad could use some civilizing, too. I learned I was a girl early on and the best way to keep the males in line was to bite them in their boy bits (Copyright Nanook). Isaac would do the funniest dance when I did that! But 'cause my dad's a boy he made me stop doing that. The guys know I still can of course...

So eventually I got out of the water and Stan, Hercules and I started to mix it up.

This time dad didn't stop me 'cause no one snarled and I knocked Stan down butt good! (Dad's note:) NO, DAAAD, Don't tell THAT story! Pleeeease! Oh, all right. (dad's note: when Princess was a mere 70 lbs she decided that Isaac needed to play with her. She backed off, got up a galloping headstart and jumped and headbutted Isaac right in the side. She bounced off and layed there, staring up at her dad. With perfect timing he held still for 3 counts, then turned and gave her the disdainful look a locomotive might give a tennis ball after a similar collision. Probably the funniest thing Isaac has ever done) OK, OK, back to the playdate. So I have had practice and we had a great time jumping all over each other. It was the funnest day of my life! On the way home, this is what happened:

Tank's Introduction, Part 1

Hi, adoring fans everywhere! My turn to tell a little of my story. It all started in the belly of my beloved mother, Georgia. My canine paternal progenitor, Isaac, has already told you about her, so if you want to read the romance and see the honeymoon photos, go here. It's a sweet story and I'm a sweet boy! Soon after I came out my dad gave us all temporary names just to tell us apart. Mine was "Hook" Most of the rest of the pups had similarly dorky names. Thanks, dad. Mine was based on the white behind my head.

Above to the right you can see the white on the back of my neck. I guess I'm lucky he didn't call me 'coat hanger'. Then to the left, you can see all of us puppies nursing. This is the most orderly we ever were. Don't be fooled! We were a rollicking madhouse of puppy flesh jockeying for position. There are 6 puppies in this picture. Can you find us all? Princess is being coy waaay off to the left - left of Georgia's hind feet. I'm in the center - you can see my hook! That's 'cuz I was the coolest one. Still am! That yellow thing on the bottom right was Georgia's favorite toy before my dad gave her a Cuz. They called it her ice cream and even though she destroyed it she still carried it everywhere. Kind of what you might expect for a teenage mother. I was a bouncy, enthusiastic pup. I was the first-born, the biggest and the first to learn to walk. Only problem was I didn't know how to stop. So I'd walk up to my sib-pups to say hi! They were doing well just to stay standing. So I'd come up, not stop in time and knock them right over. Bowling for newf-pups! My dad knew it was a sign of things to come. Not wanting to call me 'bulldozer', for which I'm eternally grateful, he named me Tank. I was the second to get my final name. Later on he named one of my favorite sisters 'Shazaam', 'cause she learned to pounce first. She pounced on everything - leaves, us, you name it. We just went to visit her a few days ago. Her people call her 'Maggie', but I still think of her as Shazaam! That was a cool name, dad! I did one other great thing as a puppy. Feeling frisky, I climbed up my mom's back while she was laying on her side. When I got to the top of that huge mountain of Newf-flesh, I looked around from my high vantage and then slid down her belly like a big slide! Wheeeeeeeee! it was so fun I climbed up and did it again. Wheeeeeeee! Then one of the other pups saw me and they came over and did it, too. Then a few more came and then they all came. We had a line of pups waiting their turn to climb up then slide down mom. It was a riot! I tried it again 2 weeks later and it wasn't fun any more. I'd gotten so big that it wasn't even a climb any more to get up on mom, and when I tried to slide down my front paws were on the ground while my back paws were still on the other side of mom. Oh well. The rapidly fading joys of puppy-hood. I was also the last one to stop nursing. One day I tried to nurse and mom gave me a kick and a growl that scared me but good! I wasn't going to try that again!

Then came the worst day of my life. You'll hear that story in part deux...

Picky Princess' Recipe Corner: TimberWolf Fish Tacos

Hello lasses! Here's a dish I came up with tonight. You can adapt it in many ways. It was scrumptious! Not that I'd eat it twice in a row, of course. Must provide full employment for the servants.

Princess' TimberWolf Fish Tacos

2 Cups TimberWolf Ocean Blue Fish Formula

1/2 Cup Cottage Cheese - fat content consistent with dietary goals.

3 oz your favorite taco sauce

Small handful of tortilla chips, crumbled

Mix together - stirred, not shaken. My servant uses 4% milk fat because I'm such a skinny Princess. For those of you on the more generous side, use a low or no-fat version. Follow with several minutes of well earned tummy rubs. Happy eating!

Boom Woof Woof Boom

Woof, what a night! We were attacked for the last few days but last night it got horrendous! Tank was way more laid back but Isaac and I scared off every invader! Tank helped if it got really bad. They tried to frighten us with booms and pops but the really bad ones were the crack-crack-crack that went on for a while. Even Tank was worried then. But we worked really hard and scared them all off. Only the wicked, evil birds dared come in our back yard and we chased them away, too.

Today, everybody's throat here is hoarse and we're all exhausted. We're spending the whole day napping. G'nite, worn out doggies everywhere!

Mr. Isaac Says Hi!

Hey Dawgs! Isaac here! I'm the father of Princess and Tank and very proud of my kids! As the older generation I mostly leave the internet stuff to them. They're both bigger than I am. That was no fun when Tank went through his pushy stage. He was sure a bully. Good thing I'm not the alpha type. I was born Jan 2, 2004 in Tenessee. I've had a pretty hard life for a newf. My second owner in New Orleans sold me when their life got hard. My third owner's home was destroyed in Hurricaine Katrina. I was taken in by an elderly woman but I was so feisty she had to keep me in a crate all day. Of course that made me even more feisty whenever I got out. All I really want to do is play and love, just like any newf. Let me tell you, dawgs, I was one unhappy, confused newf! So this human gal who met me before Katrina had this loverly Landseer named Georgia. Whew she was a hottie! My third owners drove me to Kansas City to meet Georgia and we hit it off right away. I played in my first ever snow in Kansas City! At first I couldn't even figure out how to walk in it. Then I stuck my nose in the snow and ran, feeling the spray in my face! Weeeeheeee!

This is Georgia. We had the BEST time together!

And 2 months later, look at the belly on that babe! In there are Tank, taking up most of the room, Princess, and 4 other baby newfs! They were so cute!

That's when I came to live with my current dad and he's had me for over a year. The gal who bred me brought Georgia and Bertram, the puppies' Godfather, to her nursing home as therapy dogs. Four of the puppies went to her friends who worked at other nursing homes and they're all therapy dogs. The residents always ask for them and it's the highlight of their day to see the dogs. They hide cheetos and the dogs find them. For cheetos, I'd go anywhere! A couple of times, when Tank was mean to me and I started to play less my dad wondered if I would be better off in a house with no other dog. He just barely got the thought in his head but I knew what he was thinking and I went over and laid my head on his lap and looked up with my mournful eyes and he said I didn't have to leave unless I wanted to. That made me so happy!!

I'm such a great dad, I *loved* playing with the puppies!

Newf toy review: Flying high with the JW Pet Whirlwheel!

Your Friendly neighborhood Tank O' Saurus here to tell you about a newf toy we really like! You other pups can play too 'cause it comes in 3 sizes. It's the JW Pet Whirlwheel. Neither Isaac, Princess or I really like any frisbee-type toys unless they're either stuffy or squeak or both. The stuffies we quickly destroy and the squeekies we either lose interest in or diemsqueek and *then* lose interest in. This is the first ring shaped toy I'm really excited about! My papa likes it 'cause it flies pretty well, we like it 'cause it's tough, it squeaks and it's tons of fun to grab from each other. I try to hide toys completely in my cavernous mouth. I can get a large cuz completely in if I get it in feet first. But even I can't get this one fully inside! Here's some pictures to show you what I mean.

Princess can still get a hold of it! Really that makes it more fun, but I enjoy the feeling of superiority I get when I have the toy everyone wants where no one can get it! No one but my dad, that is. He really can reach in there.

This is one toy we *love* to chase when dad throws it. The squeaker gets us really excited just like the Cuz - I think it's the same people who make the Cuz, in fact. It's pretty challenging to pick it up off the ground. I can grab the ball in my teeth, Princess has to get an edge up and then grab it. That leaves me time to get in there and steal it!

I let Princess win just 'cause I love my little sister and I want her to play with me all the time and she's always comforting when I'm sad and telling me the right thing to do when I'm bad!

What Celebrity Doggies Do

Today's "Celebrity Doggies Do" is so hot it's erupting like lava. And remember, you heard it here first! (Princess woofs: 'cause you made it up!) Just ignore the newf behind the curtain...

Well, you all know how talented a writer Nanook is, but what you don't know, and what his fans have been clamoring for, IS, ahem, you heard it here first, remember: that Nanook...... is..... about to..... Write a book!!! That's right, Nook's Books! And wait! That's not even the half of it! Right here, right now, I, Tank, am going to reveal to you the Title of that book! (I'm not making it up, I'm predicting the future...) Nook's Book will be called (are you ready!?!) Hairy Pooka and the hors d oeuvre (Orderve) of Newf Fur. That's right! Why do you think his blog has been so full of references to Pooka's "gorilla suit" and Pooka eating Nanook's fur? Your intrepid celebrity reporter has it all figured out for you! You can thank me in the woofs! And remember, I'm not prevaricating, I'm prognosticating!

Princess introduces herself!

Hello, Dog lovers! I'm Princess, born January 4th 2006 very early in the morning! My human dad stayed up very late to deliver us all. Tank is my littermate. My mom is Georgia, a Landseer Newf who now lives on a lake with the woman who came up with the idea to breed us. My dog dad is Isaac, who will introduce himself later. They are two great newfs! I was quickly recognised as the most social of the litter. My human dad called my mom Georgia "the Queen of Everything". One day at about 10 days old I did something that reminded him of Georgia and that's when he started calling me, "Princess". I was very happy growing up and had lots of fun experiences and one bad one. One day we were all under a bush exploring and I got poked in the eye by a branch. My eye was bleeding so my dad took me to the emergency room where they took a piece of wood out of my eye and gave him some icky ointment to put in. Boy did I hate that! No severe damage but my inner eyelid covers more of my eye than it should. Another thing I remember is this big, gigantic newf named Bertram. He was jealous of the attention we puppies were getting and barked the deepest, most earthshaking bark I've ever heard before or since! My human dad hopes Tank will get that kind of bark! I'm closer to it so far. When Bertram barked at the group of puppies, they all ran away. Not me, though. I knew he needed affection so I ran right between his legs and looked adoringly up at him. From then on he always let me stay with him but none of the other puppies could. Tank used to yelp when Bertram barked. He's such a drama king! I always comfort the other dogs if they're sad or if they get in trouble. I love pleasing my papa so I almost never get in trouble.

I didn't get parvo, like Tank did, so I was separated from my human dad for a while while he took care of the pups recovering from parvo. After a few weeks I got to go back to him but my mom, Georgia, didn't come with me. That was kind of hard on me but I liked being with Tank, Isaac and my human dad. I got comfortable again fairly quickly. My Dad says I'm a natural therapy dog and as soon as I learn that "stay" means something besides, "follow" I can go to make sick children feel better. Stay is when he sticks his hand in front of my face. If he's too serious I give his hand a quick lick to remind him how much I love him. I'm getting better at the stay. I've already started working with cart shafts so I can be in parades and give kids rides.

But mostly, I love to SWIM!!! I get so excited that I rear up and paw the air like a stallion! I'm really good and fast and I always bring back what my dad throws. I've been in lakes, rivers and oceans. Dad took me to California with him. Tank and I stayed at a hotel and did all kinds of great stuff. The airplane was pretty stressful for me, I don't mind telling you.

I also love playing with Tank and Isaac. If it's too slow a day I bark at them until they play with me. I love it when dad throws a toy and we compete to see who can get it and we try to take it away from each other. I could do that all day long!

I think that's enough for now. Some of these stories I'll tell at length later.

FUN!!

Let me tell you how to spell fun - it's C.U.Z! That's the best dog toy EVER! It makes a great quacking noise, bounces crazy and stands up to the toughest chewers (me and my dog mom). Nothing gets me more excited than when my human dad quacks the cuz. Princess runs back and forth from where dad usually throws it to where dad is as he walks (Waaaaaay too slowly!) to the yard. She always runs back to him just as he's going out the back door and pokes him right in the bellybutton with her nose. She's hilarious. Princess and I go berserk chasing it and seeing who can get it first. But I always steal it from her if she gets it (Princess screams, "You do NOT!!") Do too. Well, maybe not always. Taking the Heat

Hello doggies! Tank here to tell you how much I loooooove being trimmed down in the summer. My dad has done it twice this year to keep me cooler. You should see my happy dance when it's done. I feel soooo much better. Princess and I are much more frisky. My dad wants to clear up one misconception a lot of people have so I'm going to turn things over to him. He's really boring when he gets a bee in his bonnet like this so skip past it if you don't care :)

Dad here. Summer haircuts on thick coated dogs are controversial. To shave or not to shave is a personal decision. By âshaveâ I mean a close trim. No skin should be visible. I use a #7 blade and leave about ½ inch of hair. The main reason I wanted to discuss this is to lay to rest a popular myth. When people talk about a summer trim and someone says âthe coat insulates in the heat as well as the coldâ that betrays a lack of understanding of the heat balance of mammals, people and dogs included. Mammals create heat. Mammals must lose some of that heat or they die. In cold weather that's easy. In hot weather mammals have to have a way to cool off to survive. Dogs cool primarily by panting and by sweating on their pads. Even though they don't sweat on the the skin of their bodies, there's still heat lost through their skin. Insulation slows heat loss. In cold environments that's great. In hot environments, that can be deadly. A big, thick coat will slow heat loss and thus the animal has to pant more and move less to maintain a reasonable temperature. Your thick coated dog will not be as comfortable as one with a thinner coat on hot days. But guess what? Your newf will still want to be in the air conditioning in hot weather! So shave or not, it's totally up to you, but know the truth so you make the best decisions possible.

If your dog is overheated, letting it drink is good, running cool water over it is good (this will be more effective with a short coat than a long one), but rubbing alcohol may not be the best choice. In people they've stopped using alcohol to cool because it cools so fast that it can cause seizures. There's no reason to think it's any different in dogs.
